On the MSU debate. First, I went to MSU (and did take thermodynamics.) I have known MSU TV folks that are great forecasters and love the science. I've known some that just took the classes and know nothing. FYI-the people that know nothing have not been able to get an AMS seal, good job by the board. I have also known degreed meteorologist that just use the NWS forecast and know nothing. It all depends on the person. I'm lucky enough now to be working with a hard working degreed meteorologist. He is teaching me things I didn't know. I respect him and his degree. He told me in the past he had nothing but bad things to say about MSU folks but after working with me, he says he was wrong to lump us all in the same group.
I'm also working with another degreed meteorologist (just out of school) who knows nothing about severe weather. He doesn't have a clue about the operation of the WSR-88D and how to use all the data we get. I know FAR more about severe wx and Doppler than he does (from 10+ years of experience and MSU courses.) During our first tornado event with him here, he was standing on the sidelines with his mouth open saying, "they didn't teach me any of this in college." Our news director hired him because he had a degree. He is willing to learn and I'm sure he'll be fine in a few years. My point again, it all depends on the person and their desire to learn in this interesting science.
Please don't print my name-I don't need anymore trouble with Magid!
